Tips For Getting Your Pill-Spitting Dog to Take Their Meds!

We’ve all faced it – the challenge of getting our furry friends to take their pills. No matter what we do, they seem to have a talent for spitting them out when we’re not looking. But fear not! We’ve got some creative options you can try to get your furry friend to take their meds:

🐾 Use Cheese: Barkley loves anything wrapped in cheese, so that’s my go-to for him. Other options include string cheese, cheese spread, pub cheese, cream cheese, or any cheese your dog prefers. You can also try melting the cheese, as it can make it more appealing for your pet. If your dog has food allergies, consider almond cheese after consulting with your vet.

🐾 Try marshmallows: Marshmallows are another great tool for hiding pills.  Caution – be cautious about the gelatin content for pets with food allergies. Vegan marshmallows could be an alternative.

🐾 Go for peanut butter: Many dogs love peanut butter, but make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol, as it’s toxic for dogs. For dogs with food allergies, you could consider sunbutter, a sunflower seed spread.

🐾 Offer fruits and vegetables: If your dog enjoys fruits and veggies, try boiled sweet potato cubes, squares of cantaloupe, bananas, or other dog-safe options.

🐾 Use meat products: Hide the pill in a piece of hotdog, wrap it in deli meat, or create a pill meatball using liverwurst or canned dog food.

🐾 Eggs can work too: If your dog likes eggs, you can hide the pill in lightly scrambled eggs.

🐾 Consider pill pockets or pet pill plunger/syringe: purchase pill pockets or specialized pet pill dispensers to make the process easier.

Make pill-taking time a fun event, and you’ll be successful in getting those tricky fur kids to take their meds. With a little creativity and love, we can conquer pill time together! Research pet-friendly foods and find something that appeals to your furry friend. Remember to consult with your vet if your pet has food sensitivity or allergies!
